The drought out west is causing major problems for cities and states. California's Central Valley, the nation's most productive agricultural region, has been crippled by drought. In response, water from desalinization plants is being transported from the coast of California to inland farms. Desalinization plants are not new but the technology has advanced to make them more efficient and less expensive to build than in previous years. The water shortage is causing major problems for farmers and food suppliers. For example, farmers are being forced to make hard choices: Cut back on planting crops. Sell off livestock.
